Jose Rizal University shot the lights out in the second half to emerge on top of De La Salle Zobel, 88-85, on June 10 at the Nike Summer League juniors division battle for third at the Far Eastern University Gym.
The Light Bombers found their target in the fourth period, scoring six buckets from beyond the arc with Louie Vigil’s three with :20.6 seconds to go forcing overtime. Richard Lontoc then scored a crucial backbreaking three-pointer for a three-point lead, 87-84, :48.2 to go in the extra period.
After Arnold Van Opstal and Joshua Saret traded split trips on the line, the Junior Archers had a chance to extend the game but Nico Elorde’s attempt from outside went way off the mark.
Mythical Five member Louie Vigil led with 29 points with Lontoc having the hot hand, scoring seven threes for 25 along with seven rebounds. Do-it-all guard Joshua Saret had 16 markers, seven boards, and three assists.
Luigi dela Paz was at the forefront for DLSZ with 29 points, four rebounds, and two feeds. Van Opstal was a rebound short of a double-double, ending up with 20 makers.
Anton Sevilla also had 11 points for the Alabang-based squad.
The green and white squad initially led at the start, leading by 13 in several occasions of the second period. The Lighties then started heating up in the third quarter as Vigil scored 13 points in that span and Lontoc swishing two outside bombs.
The two camps traded blows as JRU initially went up by seven, 75-68, from a flurry of treys, midpart of the fourth. This was quickly erased by the UAAP member squad with a 10-0 reply to lead, 78-75, going into the final 30 seconds of regulation.
Vigil would not be denied as he scored a heartless three off his defender near in front of his team’s bench to tie the game. Dela Paz went for the win but missed his attempt.
In the overtime stretch, the two teams worked to an 84-all tie as the nerves set in the twilight zone. Van Opstal made the first of two freebies with :40.7 left.
At the other end, the Shaw-based squad grabbed two offensive rebounds to milk the clock but made only a point in that possession with Saret netting a solitary charity and Lontoc missing both of his tries. DLSZ worked for one final play but failed to convert.
